How Often Should You Replace Your Toothbrush?

How often do you change your toothbrush? If you can’t remember, or if it’s been a little while, it may be time for you to change yours out.

Brushing your teeth is an essential part of keeping your teeth and gums healthy. You should be brushing your teeth twice per day with a fresh and functional toothbrush. For more information about good dental hygiene habits, call Mountain Bay Dental Implants and Orthodontics.

When Should You Replace Your Toothbrush?

Most dentists recommend replacing your toothbrush every three months. Over time, your toothbrush will be worn down and become less effective. At about three months, the bristles begin to break down and stop working as they should.

In addition to the bristles being worn down, your toothbrush can hold bacteria. If you use your toothbrush when you have a cold or another sickness, those germs will live in your toothbrush, and you could be reinfected.

What Are the Dangers of Not Replacing a Toothbrush?

When you don’t replace your toothbrush, bacteria and fungus can accumulate. You could also end up with gum disease because old toothbrushes aren’t effective at removing plaque. Some people may get sick from the mold, bacteria, and fungus that builds upon their toothbrushes.
